The Texas Republican Party Platform -- Role of Government

The Texas Republican Party talks about freedom and small government, as shown in the following paragraph from the Republican platform;

_______________

"We respect and cherish the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and our Founders’ intent to restrict the power of the federal government over the states and the people. We believe self-government, based on personal integrity of a proper moral foundation, is the best government. This is best balanced with limited civil government, coupled with public trust, to provide collectively for the people those services not efficiently achieved individually."

_______________

Let's examine the hypocrisy of this statement. The Bush administration has instituted the Patriot Act. This act reflects the Republicans REAL attitude: EXPANDING the power of the federal government and LIMITING civil liberties. Does it respect and cherish the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. I think not!

And the federal government is the largest that it has ever been. Spending is out of control. This is hardly limited civil government. And it is certainly not efficient.

Shouldn't the Texas Republican Party rewrite its platform to reflect its reality?

I think we are missing the point. It is not the Republican platform that needs rewritten as much as it is the false perception that the Republicans have been able to maintain. Clearly it is Republicans that should be labeled big government and excessive spending. Too bad they spend it all with their rich Republican businesses and corporations on weapons of mass destruction and not on education and other needs here at home.

Steve is correct.
The Republicans are the big spenders. If you want fiscal responsibility, the Democratic Party has a proven track record.

Bill Clinton accomplished this during his presidency. Needless to say, George W. Bush hasn't.

I think it is important to look at the local picture and try and see how the Texas Democratic and Republican platforms differ and how it effects us here in Gregg County. Policies that fail to support Public Education, fail to protect us from corporate greed, fail to have fair taxation and policies that attack the poor, minorities and other groups should not be accepted or supported regardless of your political affiliation.
